Key features

The Life CERSUDS, Ceramic Sustainable Urban Drainage System (LIFE15 / CCA / ES / 000091), is a European innovation project in which a permeable pavement system has been developed. The solution introduces affordable ceramic tiles for permeable paving, which have been applied in a pilot project in the municipality of Benicàssim (Castellón, Spain). The scheme has covered the redevelopment of 200 m section of Torre de San Vicent street, between Mossén Elíes and Tramontana streets, with the implementation of an area of about 2000 m² of permeable ceramic pavement. In addition, geocellular crates were installed as conveyance and storage features.

The construction of the pilot project was carried out between February and July 2018, following by a water monitoring campaign from August 2018 to July 2019. The analysis of the monitoring data showed that the system managed 86% of the rain volume, which enabled the validation of the CERSUDS pavement. The project also showed a significant reduction in pollutants, which results in the possibility of using the harvested water for irrigation purposes.
